Purchase of a Sequential Aerosol Sample Collector to be used with Automatic Extraction System
Aarhus University wants to purchase a Series 110A sequential aerosol spot sampler for collection of airborne aerosol particles. The aerosol spot sampler will be used with an Aerosol Devices PAL 700 automatic sample extraction system, which can be coupled directly with an existing ultrahigh performance liquid chromatograph-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (UHPLC-qTOF-MS) for automatic sample injection and molecular analysis. The combined system for sequential aerosol sampling and automatic extraction will be used for time-resolved investigations of organic composition of aerosols collected from ambient air and laboratory chamber studies.
The research group ‘Aarhus Centre for Analytical Chemistry, Atmosphere and Climate’ at the Chemistry Department of Aarhus University intend to purchase a Series 110A sequential aerosol spot sampler for coupling with Aerosol Devices PAL700 automatic sample extraction system for a planned research project.
The combined system will allow us to investigate chemistry of formation and growth of aerosols in chamber studies and to study chemical composition of aerosols in ambient air both with high time-resolution (from minutes to 24 hours) and unattended collection of up to 32 samples. The size range of collected aerosol particles should be from 5 nanometer to 10 micrometer. The aerosol spot sampling plates can easily be stored (in a freezer) and transported, taking up minimal space. Coupling with the automatic sample extraction system enables accurate extraction in organic solvent mixtures and avoids labor-intensive filter extraction and potential artifacts associated with filter sampling and extraction of aerosols. The automated extraction system will be coupled directly with an ultrahigh performance liquid chromatograph coupled with an UHPLC-qTOF-MS for automatic injection of solvent extract aliquots in order to avoid sample loss. It can be very time-consuming to collect and extract a high number of aerosol samples, and the automatic system will enable us to obtain a much higher time-resolution than filter sampling and manual extraction. Furthermore, the system will enable studies at low concentration levels, which are important for e.g. performing experiments at atmospherically relevant levels.
Our requirements:
Particle size range: 5nm to >2.5μm for dry collection
Collection efficiency: >95 % for dry collection;
Sample flow rate: 1.0 – 1.5 L/min (user adjustable)
Sample aerosol conditions: sequential sampling into multi-well sample plate with 32 wells
Sequential sample time: user selectable sample time in each well from 1 minute to 24 hours
Dry deposition area: approx. 1-mm diameter
Liquid sampling with small volume of 0.65 mL for liquid or gel substrate
Possibility for integration with automatic extraction system for extraction in organic solvent mixtures directly from sampling well, assisted by ultrasound or orbital shaking, followed by direct, automatic injection for UHPLC-qTOF-MS analysis.
Section IV: Procedure
- The products involved are manufactured purely for the purpose of research, experiment, study or development under the conditions stated in the directive
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
The rearch group has performed a systematic search for commercially available systems for sequential aerosol spot sampling to be used with automatic sample extraction in organic solvent mixtures and direct coupling with UHPLC-qTOF-MS. The Series 110A sequential aerosol spot sampler (Aerosol Devices Inc.) to be used with an automatic sample extraction system (Aerosol Devices PAL 700 manufactured by CTC Analytics AG) is the only commercially available system on the market, which can perform this task.

Following the notification, a standstill period of 10 calendar days will be held in accordance to paragraph 3 of Act No 593 of 2 June 2016 on the Danish Act on the Complaints Board for public Procurement. This implies that the contracting authority cannot sign the contract with the winning tenderer before the standstill period has expired.
In case of complaints about tenders or decisions, e.g. award of contracts covered by Section II or III in the Danish Public Procurement Act must be submitted to the Complaints Board for Public Procurement (Klagenævnet for udbud) within 45 calendar days from the day after the contractor published a notice in the Official Journal on the conclusion of a contract. At the latest concurrently with submission of an appeal to the Complaints Board for Public Procurement, the complainant must inform the contracting authority of the alleged infringement, and whether the appeal is to be referred to the board.
