Section II: Object
high-power, long-pulse/high-duty-cycle travelling wave tube
Aarhus University wishes to buy a high-power, long-pulse/high-duty cycle travelling wave tube amplifier (TWT) for X-band pulsed Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) NMR spectroscopy. The aim is to build a flexible frontline instrument for systematic design of DNP experiments with high sensitivity and pulsed EPR experiments for accurate electron-electron distance measurements. The goal is to increase performance significantly relative to state-of-the-art methods. The methods developed will be applied in structural biology, materials science, and nanotechnology.
Aarhus
For development of optimal pulsed EPR and DNP experiments meeting theoretical expectations to sensitivity and information content, we need to build frontline X-band fast-waveform pulsed EPR and DNP instrumentation with fast and highly flexible control of microwave pulses using a fast high-end arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) and strong amplification of long/high-duty-cycle microwave (mw) pulses. The necessary technical requirements for the pulse TWT (travelling wave tube) amplifier should at least fulfil:
- 1-2 kW amplitude
- 8-12 GHz frequency range
- 6% duty cycle
- 0.07 - 100 s pulse width range
- max 0.1 dB amplitude variation, < ±1° pk to pk phase noise.
- max 200 ns input to RF delay, max 15 ns RF rise/fall time
Section IV: Procedure
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
We are building a flexible EPR-DNP instrument based on a well-tested recipe from ETH (published by Doll and Jeschke in Journal of Magnetic Resonance 280, 46-62, 2017) including the use of custom-made software interfacing. We have carefully analyzed the marked in terms of vendors that can provide the desired instrumentation. We have found no other companies than Applied Systems Engineering, Inc that can provide the desired high-power, long pulse/duty-cycle pulse TWT amplifier we need for experiment development on the EPR-DNP instrument.

In case of complaints about tenders or decisions, e.g. award of contracts covered by Section II or III in the Danish Public Procurement Act must be submitted to the Complaints Board for Public Procurement (Klagenævnet for udbud) within 45 calendar days from the day after the contractor published a notice in the Official Journal on the conclusion of a contract. At the latest concurrently with submission of an appeal to the Complaints Board for Public Procurement, the complainant must inform the contracting authority of the alleged infringement, and whether the appeal is to be referred to the board.
