II.1.4) Short description:

The Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering at Aarhus University wishes to purchase a volumetric 3D bioprinter for the manufacturing of 3D bio-constructs in sterile vials. We aim to purchase a volumetric 3D printer that will allow us to design and manufacture centimeter-scale acellular and cell-laden 3D constructs with various photosensitive bio-materials to study the interactions between cells and their surrounding environment.

II.1.6) Information about lots
This contract is divided into lots: no
II.1.7) Total value of the procurement (excluding VAT)
Value excluding VAT: 825 874.63 DKK
II.2) Description
II.2.3) Place of performance
NUTS code: DK04 Midtjylland
II.2.4) Description of the procurement:

The extracellular environment, notably the geometry and the material content, has been shown to shape the function and growth of cells and organoids. 3D bioprinters have demonstrated potential for studying a wide variety of applications, ranging from personalized medicine to regenerative medicine. However, most 3D bioprinters operate in a layer-by-layer fashion, which limits the printing speed and thus the post-printing viability and function of the cell- or organoid-laden three-dimensional constructs. With the purchased volumetric 3D bioprinter we will study more complex and advanced cell functions than what is currently accessible with existing 3D bio-printers, notably we will study how porous, curved and hollow constructs influence stem cell migration and differentiation. Additionally, we will combine multiple functional biomaterials directly during operation, e.g. for a high-throughput printing of multi-scale vasculatures, intestinal villi and crypt structures, or lymph vessels, for heart muscle regeneration, modeling intestinal epithelium-pathogen interactions or immunological reactions, respectively. These bio-constructs may represent XXX at the cellular scale. Such bio-constructs have potential to be used as organ models for regenerative medicine or drug screening applications.

Above mentioned requirements demand a 3D bioprinter with very specific features and capabilities. In particular, the ability to 3D print in a volumetric and not layer-by-layer manner, the ability to process materials developed by our laboratory with off-the-shelf photo-initiators, the demonstrated high cellular and organoid post-printing viability; the ability to upgrade the 3D printer with additional laser wavelength lines without any major modification to the system are the most important requirements.

II.2.5) Award criteria

Section IV: Procedure

IV.1) Description
IV.1.1) Type of procedure
Award of a contract without prior publication of a call for competition in the Official Journal of the European Union in the cases listed below
  • The procurement falls outside the scope of application of the directive
Explanation:

Many 3D bioprinter suppliers on the market offer 3D bioprinters that fulfil some portion of the requirements specified above. However, Readily3D SA is the only commercial supplier that can deliver a 3D bioprinter that can operate volumetrically with third-party photosensitive materials, such as the materials developed by our laboratory whilst also having demonstrated a high cellular and organoid viability as well as fulfilling all the other necessary requirements that are important for our research.
