Acquisition of a PEA POD
Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports,
UCPH has many years’ experience with research
studies involving children in all ages. Furthermore,
the department has for many years conducted
research measuring body composition using
different methods e.g. DXA, bio impedance, and
skin folds.
The PEA POD will be used to measure body
composition (especially fat mass, primary outcome)
in a new intervention study “PREPARE CHILD -
CPH” involving 240 couples planning pregnancy
and their expected children. This method is suitable
for children from birth to 8 kilos. The assessment
takes 5 min, is free from radiation and will be
conducted in underwear or tight clothes. The validity
of the PEA POD compares to that of dual energy
absorptiometry scan and 4-compartment models
(gold standard) in infants and toddlers.

The PEA POD is suitable for children from birth to 8 kilos and has a validity comparable to that of dual energy absorptiometry scan and 4-compartment models (gold standard) in children (Orsso et al. 2020). The PEA POD assessment is fast and noninvasive; the infant is lying in a small space and can see their parents through the glass front panel reducing anxiousness and movement. It has the advantage of a faster measurement that is free from radiation. This reduces ethical concerns for the infants and does not require special protection of the staff or shielding of the measurement room.
