We are planning to buy a BD FACSymphony S6 (30 parameter 6B/3R/8V/4YG/7UV) sorter as replacement of a 11 year old BD ARIA-III sorter owned by the department and used to service more than 100 independent users. The key - and therefore unique - factor is the patented cascadecagon Longpass/Bandpass filter setup of the S6 were the instrument stays flexible due to the ability to manually change, in user applicable fashion, the light cutting elements. This will enable the department to continue to operate classical Flow Cytometry as required for a larger set of protocols coming from the, to be replaced, ARIA-III setup, while retaining the ability to advance the technology with the maturation of spectral capabilities in parallel. As a process of recycle the Old ARIA-III will be taken back by BD and the value will be deducted in our new purchase. We have a BD Fortessa X20 Analyser, anyone who design an experiment with X20 can plan a cell sorting (using S6) without spending much time.

  • The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
    • protection of exclusive rights, including intellectual property rights
  • Additional deliveries by the original supplier ordered under the strict conditions stated in the directive
Explanation:

The purchase of the S6 sorter is routed in the soul provision of the BD proprietary cascadecagon setup allowing the combination and provision user optimizable LP and BP filter choices to enable in-the-field customizable mono-detector flow cytometry (legacy proving) and full-spectrum flow cytometry analysis at the same time. It is crucial for the core facility to provide a setup that allows us to provide legacy analysis based on the same LP-BP combinations on identical instruments while at the same time enabling novel assays to profit from full-spectrum flow cytometry. S6 has an unique STEPSORT options which includes enhanced plate sorting hardware and StepSort software to enable more accurate and faster sorting on 96, 384 and 1536 well plates.

The cascadecagon technology is patented by BD and part of the uniqueness of this setup:

US Patent No. covering Europe and additional areas of the world:

The S6 sorter is to replace an ARIA-III sorter where users have developed their protocols for. A significant number of projects involves sorting cells on 96 or 384 and 1536 well plate single cell sorting and only S6 fulfill our demand.

BRIC scientists has a multiple long-running legacy protocols within stem cell isolation and cultivation where methods of isolation and cultivation have been adapted to the product stemming from the cuvette-based Aria cell sorter brand. The platform has to ensure the continuity of these protocols to allow researchers to integrate their data in the future.
