Section II: Object
Acquisition of a Monaco - Optos PLC
Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) was established in 2010 at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
The vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms the basic understanding of the mechanisms involved in metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies.
The purchase of Monaco from Optos is an essential part of the data collection for the Danish Precision Health Initiative, where we collect data on multiple aspects of the cardiometabolic health status of participants. Monaco is a unique ophthalmic imaging device used primarily to examine the structures of the retina, macula, and optic nerve. Monaco combines the proprietary optomap confocal scanning laser technology with widefield Spectral Domain OCT to provide a complete overview of retinal structure.
Section IV: Procedure
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- protection of exclusive rights, including intellectual property rights
The Monaco system is the only ophthalmic imaging device to incorporate the following essential functions:
- Combined UWF (200°) fundus imaging and OCT
- Single image captures 82% (927 mm2) of the retina, covers 200° of the internal surfaces of the retina, and reaches beyond the equator showing vortex vessels and ampullae.
- Ultra-widefield (200°) image capture in less than half a second.
- Ellipsoidal mirror with virtual point technology enables maximum imaging field of view.
- Clinically validated colour imaging- equivalent to colour fundus photography for pathology detection
- Ease of use validated in multi-site clinical studies and proven to enhance clinic flow.
- Proprietary software presents images in a consistent geometry that accurately represents anatomical features across the retina and allows for accurate measurements across the retina.
- Color imaging with red/green lasers to minimise exposure to blue light
- All functions (colour photo, red-free photo, choroidal imaging, AF imaging, OCT) are included in a single compact system.

We are aligning with other Danish cohorts to be able to compare analyses in the future. These cohorts use Monaco from Optos PLC and thus it is very important that we use the same equipment
