Acquisition of a Axio Imager Vario
The Niels Bohr Institute is part of the Faculty of SCIENCE at the University of Copenhagen. The Niels Bohr Institute has a 100 year long tradition of excellence within science, in particular within the area of quantum physics. The institute was inaugurated on March 3, 1921, by Professor Niels Bohr. We are approx. 430 researchers, 70 administrative and technical staff, 100 PhD students and 400 students. The European Physical Society has declared the Niels Bohr Institute a Historic Site of great international importance for the development of physics and research.
An optical microscope (OM) is an essential tool for our characterization efforts here at NQCP.
The OM will be one among a handful of highly specialized characterization tools that will be used daily. Each will give essential feedback for trouble-shooting and improving our in-house produced novel materials. Modern OM models are highly automized, enabling fast and consistent overview and inspection measurements on wafer-scale. This specific model has associated software that allows correlative studies with specific scanning electron microscopes.
Section IV: Procedure
- The products involved are manufactured purely for the purpose of research, experiment, study or development under the conditions stated in the directive
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
The following is crucial for our choice of optical microscope for characterization:
Must have >150 x 150 mm scanning stage
Automatic full scans of up to 6-inch wafers are required. This product has 200x200 mm scanning stage.
Focus map required
Tilts will always be present when acquiring big maps. This tool has a focus map software solution.
Anti-vibration table
Besides the focus map, anti-vibration is crucial in the production of wafer scale micrographs.
Must have x5 to x150 scopes, including a x50 with long working distance
A wide selection of scopes is required to accommodate our various characterization needs. Especially a x5 wide view, a x50 with long working distance and one extreme magnification of x150 are crucial.
Must have reflected light: BF, DF, DIC and 360 deg polarization
Our work with many different material platforms requires a wide selection of light options to quickly locate and highlight various kinds of patterns, defects, morphologies. Especially circular DIC, unique to this vendor, will speed up inspections at high magnifications.
Transmitted light is required
Some of our samples are transparent. For these, transmitted light highlights certain features, not visible with reflected light.
Must be CorrMeas compatible.
This software allows correlative work between, various types of microscopes and device designs. It also controls the API of those microscopes, enabling quick and automatic location of features of interest observed in other tools.
The optical microscope will be used to get an overview of the sample to locate certain features that other tools like a scanning electron microscope then can analyze in higher detail.
Searching for features of interest with electron microscopes can deteriorate the surface. This is avoided by optical pre-identification.
The combination of correlative maps and API control will largely increase the speed of our research progress.
CorrMeas, being an independent software supplier, is ideal because it allows correlative work between hardware of different vendors, such as Zeiss and Oxford.
