Section II: Object
Purchase of a PTR-MS.
We intend to purchase a proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometer specially suitable for analysis of gaseous ammonia and polar semi-volatile compounds with high sensitivity and high time resolution. The purpose is to measure fluxes and concentrations of ammonia and organic compounds, which have a tendency to adversely adsorb to surfaces in the equipment. In order to overcome this challenge, the instrument must be equipped with a specially designed high-temperature inlet that can reach at least 180 degrees C and with insignificant surface adsorption of ammonia and polar organic compounds. Special consideration must be given to the material selection of the ion source in order to achieve this. The instrument must be applicable for eddy-covariance flux measurements of ammonia thanks to the design of the inlet. The mass filter must be of the Time-of-flight type in order to enable high frequency measurements without compromising the mass scale range.

The mass filter must be of the Time-of-flight type in order to enable high frequency measurements without compromising the mass scale range. In order to measure lower concentrations than typically used instruments of this kind, the instrument must be equipped with an ion focusing unit between the ion source and the mass filter/detection unit. The instrument must be equipped with alternative ionization options in order to enable ionization by positively charged oxygen and nitric oxide.
