The Wireless Transceivers research group recently established at AU carries out a innovative research programme. The program, among other things, focuses on design, implementation and test of circuits and systems in silicon technology for mm-wave passive radiometric imaging systems for new applications in multi-disciplinary domains such as Bio and Geo Sciences, such as sub-cutaneous cancer detection, climate change observations, solar flares detections. In order to complete their research, the group needs to purchase a specific (could-source based) VNA/PNA Instrument.
Section IV: Procedure
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
The PNA-X by Keysight Technologies — is the only VNA/PNA instrument — commercially available that incorporates ultra-low noise receivers, allowing direct NF measurements with the highest accuracy up to the mm-waves, up to the maximum frequency of 50 GHz. Moreover, owing the ultra-low noise receivers, the PNA-X by Keysight Technology allow NF measurements beyond the maximum frequency capability through indirect could-source technique, i.e. the most accurate. In this regard, in the past years Domenico Zito's research group together with Keysight Technology developed for the world-first extension of the cold-source NF measurement technique suitable for the V (50-75 GHz) and W (75-110 GHz) bands (see attached article). The developed cold-source NF methodology is based on the PNA-X (i.e. the sole VNA/PNA instrument with ultra-low noise receivers commercially available) and agile hardware extensions, which allow overcoming the severe limitations and accuracy reductions of the existing techniques for indirect NF measurements on next-generation mm-wave circuits and systems, as those targeted by the research and innovation programme carried out by the Wireless Transceivers research group at AU.
