Dynacool Physical Property Measurement System
The QuantumDesign Dynacool Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) facilitates a thorough characterization of materials both in the form of powders and single-crystals.
The system is largely modular which facilitates easy modification of methods and experimental parameters. Furthermore, the system is designed to perform a variety of automated measurements that enables high-throughput screening experiments.
DTU Lyngby Campus.
The QuantumDesign Dynacool Physical Property Systems excels in the following points:
1) its magnet properties (200 Oe/s sweep rate, field stability 1 ppm/h, charging of magnet possible without warming up the system, automatic discharge of the magnet if water chiller fails).
2) temperature control (cooldown time from room temperature to 2 K of <45 mins without precooling the sample space, system provides 3 thermometers for temperature control to allow observation of undesired temperature gradients, measurements are possible while sweeping the temperature which allows very rapid mate-rials screening, dual helium impedance design allows continuous, fully automated, low-temperature operation)
3) options and sensitivity (VSM motor powered by the power source to allow long-term operation meaning no interruption for battery charging, RMS sensitivity of 10-6 emu in dc mode and 10-8 emu in AC mode)
Section IV: Procedure
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
The system features a unique combination of experimental capabilities for physical property determinations in materials research including magnetometry, electronic and thermal properties.
Importantly, this encompasses the possibilities of a fully automated, continuous low-temperature operation, quick data acquisition (e.g. whilst ramping temperature) allowing for high throughput materials screening, easy modification of experimental parameters and the use of dedicated, user-friendly software.

Section VI: Complementary information
The QuantumDesign Dynacool Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) facilitates a thorough characterization of materials both in the form of powders and single-crystals.
The system is largely modular which facilitates easy modification of methods and experimental parameters. Furthermore, the system is designed to perform a variety of automated measurements that enables high-throughput screening experiments.
The PPMS encompasses a longitudinal magnet of 9 Tesla, a vibrating sample magnetometer, alternating current susceptibility option, electrical resistivity and heat capacity options. These options render it possible to perform a thorough characterization of the magnetic properties in a wide temperature range (1.9–400 K) with both static (DC) and dynamic (AC) magnetic fields.
The thermal transport option enables measurements of thermal properties, including thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficients, and allows a fully automated determination of the thermoelectric figure of merit, which is the quantity of main interest for the thermoelectric materials.
The DC resistivity option adds resistance bridge capability, which provides for van der Pauw and 4-wire resistance measurements on both single-crystals and pressed pellets. The system is completely liquid cryogen-free and the VSM powered by a power source that does not need recharging. Therefore the system will be operational all day-all year. The PPMS system will be located at the Department of Chemistry, DTU, and will be maintained and administrated by the applicant and his research group.
