Reparation of the Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS)
The PPMS is extremely important to a broad range of research areas including permanent magnets, single molecule magnets, superconductors, topological insulators, thermoelectric materials, photovoltaic materials, ionic conductors, and much more. The PPMS provides fundamental and functional characterization of inorganic materials, and is key to both material optimization and discovery of novel material systems
The PPMS is used for characterization of solid inorganic materials by measuring a broad range of physical properties:
— Heat Capacity,
— Magnetic Susceptibility,
— AC Susceptibility,
— AC and DC Electrical Transport, incl. Hall Effect,
— Thermal Conductivity,
— Seebeck Coefficient,
— Thermoelectric Figure of Merit.
All characterizations are carried out as a function of temperature (1.8 K to 400 K), magnetic field (0 to ±9 T), and for AC measurements as a function of frequency. The versatility and flexibility of the PPMS system is key to designing specialized measurement procedures with this large parameter matrix.
As the PPMS system is aging, it has developed several issues and is in need of a thorough refurbishment. A plan for eliminating all known issues and system. The refurbishment also includes periodic maintenance and replacement of relevant parts and is expected to bring the system close to as-new condition and reduce operating costs. The main issues that will be addressed is:
— Restore all measurement capabilities to as-new performance,
— Improve temperature control and restore the original temperature range,
— Eliminate excessive helium consumption and improve helium recovery efficiency,
— Repair broken magnet control hardware,
— Eliminate system vulnerabilities by replacing deprecated electronics.
The refurbishment requires replacement of parts of the electronics, replacement of helium gas flow hardware and service of helium recovery hardware, service and replacement of some vacuum parts, replacement of cryopump, and upgraded software compatible with the newer hardware versions. The assistance of a technician is required to service the instrument, integrate replaced components with the existing system components, and verify the system integrity after the refurbishment. As the supplier of the PPMS in Europe, LOT-QuantumDesign GmbH. is deemed the only supplier of original spare parts and qualified technicians to perform the required tasks.
Section IV: Procedure
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
