Upgrade of current system (Two-Photon Ultima-IV) and installation of an additional microscope head
Aarhus University wants to upgrade current microscope system.
We believe that the upgrade of the “Ultima-IV” can only be done by the same company since they are the only providers of the enhancements that we require of the system. Beside the microscope is designed and programmed to work with their operating software. It would be a major risk to switch to another software since many projects rely on the continued functionalities of this system.
Regarding the new microscope head, it has to share the lasers and the current optical path of the Ultima-IV. In this context and since the new microscope head has to work as an extension of the existing system, it is essential to have the new acquisition system delivered from the same company.

Major re-arrangement of the current optical setting to be able to connect and share the optical path of the Ultima-IV. Currently, the optical path is designed to work with only one microscope head. Re-arranging the optical path for a new microscope head will require significant coordination between the two microscope heads, with our current and soon-to-be upgraded system having the priority in case a conflict occurs. It is almost impossible to coordinate this if we choose two different solutions and we fear that the responsibility for the interface between the two heads will be "no man's land" leading to delays and suboptimal functionality.
Regarding the homogenization of postprocessing programming:
After the acquisition of data, we need to process it with an established programming pipeline that has taken years to set up in our group. This pipeline is based on input files which are loaded directly from the system. Setting up a microscope head from another system would necessarily require the installation of acquisition software from another company, which will deliver raw data files in another format. We would then need to homogenize the output format of both systems to be able to use our existing processing pipeline. Due to the function of the system as a multiuser entity, we aim to provide the users the facility to be able to scan with any of the scanners available (any of both microscopes). Working with two different output formats would be very time consuming and difficult, and to homogenize these will require a substantial programming effort with no guarantee of optimal performance.
Section IV: Procedure
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
