Section II: Object
Acquisition of a LASM to Niels Bohr Institute (IceFlow Project)
The large area scanning Instrument is instrument that we have developed together with the German Company Schäfter + Kirchhoff and is intended to be used during the EGRIP deep ice core drilling project to make observations of ice crystal size on the surface of ice cores.
The contracting institution is the Niels Bohr Institute at University of Copenhagen. This is the physics institute at the University and the IVillum Investigator IceFlow is part of the geophysical research groups here. The institution has freezers where the Greenland ice cores are stores and includes facilities to measure on ice cores.
The large area scanning Instrument is instrument that we have developed together with the German Company Schäfter + Kirchhoff and is intended to be used during the EGRIP deep ice core drilling project to make observations of ice crystal size on the surface of ice cores.
Section IV: Procedure
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
The large area scan macroscope from Schäfter + Kirchhoff enables scientists with the possibility that ice core sections can be automatically scanned at high resolution and speed, totally circumventing the highly time consuming procedure of taking and then matching numerous individual microscope images, by hand at the computer.
Also, the sublimation problems affecting the porosity of the ice during prolonged exposure times are also avoided by such high through puts.
The large area scan macroscope from Schäfter+Kirchhoff is the only macroscope on the market with unique functions enabling scanning at temperatures down to -40ºC (and ultimately at -60ºC) with a 55 cm 50 nm precision.
