Department of Biomedicine at Aarhus University wants to purchase a hybrid high-resolution mass spectrometer with MSN capability and an integrated LC setup. The instrument will be used for protein research with a focus on proteomics including quantitative analysis and assessment of low abundant protein post-translational modifications.

The new instrument shall have the following specifications:

— high-resolution instrument with HCD and CID fragmentation (resolution 500 000 FWHM),

— High accuracy (< 3 ppm),

— MS3 capability,

— must be able to perform analysis of isobaric tags (up to 10 plex) and use MS3 for quantification (multinotch fragmentation),

— integrated HPLC and simple interface of analytical HPLC columns,

— fully compatible with current infrastructure including Proteome discoverer (Thermo Fisher’s proprietary data format), Mascot and MaxQuant.

Explanation:

There is only one supplier that can provide the instrument that fulfills all our needs.

There is only one supplier of the Orbitrap technology (patented).

The SPS MS3 and the high resolution essential for 10-plex is only available in the Thermo Scientific Tribrid type of instruments (Fusion series).

Current infrastructure rely on Thermo Fisher’s proprietary data format (RAW files).
