II.1.4) Short description:

Purchase of Ultrasound system with transducers with frequencies up to 70 MHz from (Fujifilm/Visualsonics)

Will be used to investigate the possibility of using super high frequency ultrasound to identify very small cutaneous neurinoma sprouting from cut nerve endings after surgery and to explore the effect of cryoablation hereof.

The Vevo MD (Fujifilm/Visualsonics) is the only super high frequency ultrasound system available on the market offering ultrasound transducers with frequencies up to 70 MHz.

II.2.4) Description of the procurement:

The costumer is head of the regional anaesthesia research group affiliated to Aarhus University. We need to purchase a specific ultrasound system for a planned research project.

Research problem:

Neuropathic pain from small cutaneous neurinoma occurring after surgery is a major and widespread clinical problem. However, a large fraction of such neurinoma are not detectable with conventional high frequency ultrasound (up to 20 MHz). Therefore, they cannot be treated with cryoablation in order to eliminate the chronic pain. The chronic pain associated with such neurinomas is associated with opioid use, which entails many adverse effects and complications such as addiction and abuse. This is debilitating for the patient as well as the society.

Research idea:

Our idea is to investigate the possibility of using super high frequency ultrasound to identify very small cutaneous neurinoma sprouting from cut nerve endings after surgery and to explore the effect of cryoablation hereof.

What do we need:

Ultrasound system with transducers with frequencies up to 70 MHz

Super high frequency ultrasound systems on the market:

The customer have made a systematic search for commercially available clinical ultrasound systems offering super high frequency ultrasound. The Vevo MD (Fujifilm/Visualsonics) is the only super high frequency ultrasound system available on the market offering ultrasound transducers with frequencies up to 70 MHz. This provides us with extremely high resolution that allows us to visualize the very small superficial nerve branches and neurinomas down to the size of 30 micrometers which are the targets of our interest.
