Acquisition of a Oxford Nanopore Technologies Promethion maschine
The acquisition concerns a Oxford Nanopore Technologies Promethion DNA and RNA sequencing maschine that is specialized in sequencing extremely long reads (up to 2 000 000 basepairs).
Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) produces DNA and RNA sequencing machines that are specialized in sequencing extremely long reads (up to 2 000 000 basepairs). This feature is unique to ONT machines and no other manufacturer comes close to matching their capabilities. Furthermore, ONT platforms are capable of sequencing RNA directly without transforming it to cDNA first, as all other sequencing technologies require. Extremely long sequencing reads and direct RNA sequencing are features that are absolutely essential to the plans of the Environmental microbial genomics group (EMG) headed by newly appointed prof. Lars Hestbjerg Hansen at section for microbiology and biotechnology, PLEN. As the ONT platform with the highest throughput, the Promethion produces enormous amounts of data that will be used in projects exploring complex metagenomes, as well as sequencing of complex eukaryote genomes including plants. The purchase of an ONT Promethion machine will surely lead to numerous fruitful collaborations.
The contracting institution is the department of plant and environmental sciences, section for genetics and microbiology. Research at the department focuses on plants, animals, soil and microorganisms – from molecules through organisms to populations and anthropogenic ecosystems. It is our vision to maintain and develop our position as one of the principle centres for plant biology based on excellent basic and applied research. Research at the department of plant and environmental sciences is divided into nine sections covering a wide range of subjects.
Section IV: Procedure
- The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
Only ONT can provide sequencing platforms that can produce reads of up to 2 000 000 basepairs, as well as direct sequencing of RNA.
For projects involving metagenomics, transcriptomics and whole genome sequencing of eukaryotes, we need the extremely long reads, as well as the enormous throughput (up to 200 Gbp) that only the Promethion can provide.
The Nanopore technology is held exclusively by ONT.
