II.2.4) Description of the procurement:

GLOBE institute is a newly established department at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. GLOBE aims for interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach and therefore has a strong focus on developing transformative science across our planet’s history. The acquisition of this instrument in Prof. Bizzarro’s group will allow them to strengthen their position as international leaders in the field of planetary sciences as well as expend their existing research profile to health related problems. To maintain the state-of-the-art nature of the existing instrumentation and allow us to expand our current research profile to include health-related topics, it is necessary to acquire the latest generation plasma source mass spectrometers. This new instrument, based on emerging technology, will permit the analysis of the isotopic composition for a range of key elements previously not possible with our current instruments.

Explanation:

The ThermoFisher high resolution MC-ICP-MS is the only instrument on the current market that has the capacity of producing accuracy and reproducibility because of the virtual amplifier concept, stability as a result of water cooled magnet, analytical flexibility due to combination of zoom optic and the moveable collector array and, finally, the range of potential applications for elements in the intermediate mass range. Sensitivity as a result of the jet interface and 10 kV acceleration voltage. Safety because of the grounded ion source. No other supplier is offering a similar capacity considering the abovementioned aspects.
