Aquisition of a Calscreener
ISIM is a Department under SUND at KU that researches in microbiology and immunology. We would like quantitative measurements of cell activity by the interaction between bacteria and human cells as well as bacteria exposed to antibiotics. This is to elucidate new treatments for infections. This has previously only been possible with expression analysis but with the CalScreener we can measure directly on the cells over time. The CalScreener instrument is a so-called “multi-channel isothermal calorimetric system” that measures heat generation by metabolic activity of cells.

The calScreener is the only commercially available multi-channel isothermal calorimetric system that is specifically developed for cell-based assays.
Another unique factor of the calScreener is the low time constant that provides high time resolution. As we are studying detailed mechanistic aspects related to biofilm formation and treatment thereof in real-time, it is important for us not to miss rapid changes in metabolic behavior at specific time periods that can be crucial to understand the underlying mechanistic factor at any given time point. The calScreener is also the only isothermal microcalorimetry system on the market that has minimized the sample volume, thereby reducing the cost of reagents which is an important factor for us.
The apparatus performs a series of specific tasks. Only the selected supplier is able to provide the necessary apparatus. Please refer to the background information provided in section 1 for further details.
