Section IV: Procedure

IV.1) Description
IV.1.1) Type of procedure
Negotiated procedure without prior publication
  • The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
    • absence of competition for technical reasons
Explanation:

DTU will procure an X-ray area detector for use on the DanMAX beamline at the MAX IV 3GeV synchrotron storage ring located in Lund, Sweden. The detector must be delivered in time for the commissioning estimated to start in the beginning of June 2020.

To fulfill the scientific requirements the detector must be of the Hybrid Pixel Array Detector (HPAD) type as this technology has superior signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range compared to all other area detector technologies available. The detector must have high efficiency up to the maximal photon energy of 35 keV, meaning that the detection layer must be made from either GaAs or CdTe, thus excluding Si based HPADs. Only a few manufactures can fulfill these requirements one of them being, the PILATUS3 CdTe series from DECTRIS Ltd.

One of the scientific goals of the beamline is to perform pair distribution analysis and thus high momentum transfers must be reached at a photon energy of 35 keV. Therefore, a large active area is a strict requirement. The largest commercially available detector fulfilling all of the above requirements is the PILATUS3 x 2 m with an area of 253,7 x 288,8 mm2, almost 12 times higher than other detectors on the market. It is therefore DTU’s assessment that only DECTRIS Ltd can deliver the required detector.
