Eilersen and Scansteel foodtech A/S: A partnership built on decades of accuracy and reliability

Scansteel foodtech A/S relies on Eilersen Electric Digital Systems A/S capacitive load cells to meet the challenges of harsh environments, rigorous cleaning protocols, and heavy-duty operations. Read the case study below.

A Case Study on Eilersen Capacitive Load Cells

Scansteel foodtech A/S (scansteel) is a leading global manufacturer of machinery and processing lines, serving a diverse range of industries. These industries include meat and poultry preparation, pet food production, processed cheese, plant-based foods, convenience/fast food preparation, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Robustness in harsh environments

The success of Scansteel and its clients hinges on four key factors: accuracy, effectiveness, robustness, and reliability. When Scansteel manufactures and delivers machinery, it is essential that everything goes according to plan, ensuring their clients are operational from day one. An accurate, effective, and robust weighing system is a critical component in Scansteel’s deliverables to their clients.

The environments in which scansteel and its customers operate are often harsh, with rigorous cleaning protocols and heavy-duty operations. “Eilersen weighing cells endure intense cleaning and harsh, wet environments, with forklifts frequently moving around. The weighing system needs to be robust, reliable, and accurate—and Eilersen delivers,” says Leif Hansen, Electrical Manager at Scansteel.

Typically, a Scansteel maschine is installed on two or four compression load cells connected to a PLC via a digital Fieldbus interface. The load cells can operate under the following conditions:

  • A working weight of up to 200 tons.
  • Internal working temperatures ranging from 40 to 180℃.
  • Horizontal expansion of the machine of up to 18 mm.
  • Welding on machines during installation

Leif Hansen has been a part of Scansteel for almost a decade. He understands the harshness of the environment. In some industries, it is easier to keep machinery clean, but when working with process machinery such as grinders and mixers for the food industry, the equipment needs thorough cleaning to ensure the highest possible quality of the final product (typically paté, dog food, or similar products). For this reason, the Eilersen loadweighing cells are also exposed to intense cleaning protocols.

“Machinery in this industry needs to be clean. I suspect that the cleaning process in our industry is rougher than you would normally see. But that is part of the game. In rough environments, we need to be certain that the weighing system is accurate and reliable—even after rigorous cleaning. That’s why we rely on Eilersen,” Leif concludes.

A legacy of accuracy and reliability

Eilersen has been in business since the 1960s, boasting a long track record of providing machine builders, such as Scansteel, with accurate and reliable weighing systems.

“We’ve relied on Eilersen weight systems since the beginning of scansteel. We use Eilersen products in every application requiring a weighing system,” says Leif Hansen. He continues, “Scansteel has exclusively relied on Eilersen’s weighing systems. For us, there is no reason to look elsewhere for these products. We are confident that we provide our customers with a weighing system that is accurate and reliable—even in the toughest of conditions. Why change?”

Eilersen’s weighing systems are thoroughly tested before dispatch to ensure a simple and easy process for mounting the weighing system. Upon receiving the load cells, scansteel takes charge of the installation and commissioning, ensuring everything runs smoothly from the outset.

“Uptime is everything for our customers. If something goes wrong, they would need to revert to a manual process, which is far from ideal. Imagine the workload that would cause. That’s bad business—for all of us. We need to make sure that our machinery and our products are easy to operate and easy to repair,” Leif stresses.

Expertise as a Service

On rare occasions, something does not go as planned. Whenever scansteel needs help and guidance concerning application use or our load cells, expertise is available as a service. All Leif has to do is pick up the phone and call Eilersen.

“If there is any issue or question related to a weighing system, I know I can reach someone who can assist me. It’s great to have access to a lifeline that can guide and help us if we need it. I can’t remember the last time I actually picked up the phone and called Eilersenyou, but there have been a few occasions when we’ve urgently needed a weighing expert to guide us through something. It’s rare, to be honest,” Leif explains.

Scansteel and Eilersen have collaborated for more than five years on numerous projects, both small and large. The Eilersen weighing systems have proven to be the best solution for scansteel and their customers. Leif concludes, “The support from Eilersen is easily accessible, and their weighing system keeps our customers’ operations running smoothly.”
