The Department of Engineering aim to purchase a rotational rheometer that will be used to determine viscosity and viscoelastic properties of different materials manufactured in our laboratory, mainly thermosets, thermoplastics, elastomers, and gels. For thermosets, we are interested in studying the irreversible crosslinking reaction of the material. Here, it is essential to determine the viscosity profiles during the curing process as well as the gel point for the given system. This will allow for the optimization of the processing of the material towards enhancing the product performance. For the thermoplastics, the polymer melt properties are of interest to us as it can be correlated to the processing of the material as well as the general material performance.
