A vast majority of research at BRIC involves flowcytometry and the machines are heavily booked all around the year. One of our Cell sorter (Aria 1) retired recently and we need to replace as soon as possible to reduce the burden of the remaining 2 sorters.

The machine we chose (BD FACS Melody) is very simple to handle by anyone without much knowledge of flowcytometry. The machine will be placed at the Core facility and made available to use by BRIC and other academic and nonacademice users.

    • absence of competition for technical reasons
Explanation:

As a research institute we have a number of novice users and it can take months before an individual become autonomous in using FACS cell sorter. FACS Melody is an ideal instrument for us for the for:

1) User interface is much simpler than any other instruments available in the market and anybody can learn how to use the machine in hours (important since we are a core facility).

2) The FACS Melody is running on the same software as we´re using for all our other instruments, further increasing user friendliness.

3) The FACS melody is only automated benchtop cell sorter on the market that fulfills our requirements.

4) Spatially separated lasers resulting in sensitivity and resolution matching that of much more expensive instruments.
